Campaign Manager: FAQ

I received an SMS - do I get charged for it?

You entered your mobile/cell number to be sent information from a website. The information was sent by SMS, and the SMS contained some information, and possibly a link to a mobile site (kind of like a mobile web site).

The SMS was powered by Campaign Mobile (www.campaignmobile.com) and it is not a premium SMS. For most people, this will mean the SMS is not charged to their mobile or cell phone account. For some carriers in the USA, it means you will be charged but only at the rate for non-premium SMS that your carrier cell plan provides.

If I visit a mobile site, what does it cost me, and what are data charges?

Depending on the plan you have with your carrier, you may be charged data charges for visiting the mobile site. Data charges are applied to the total data that your phone needs to download to be able to view the site it works pretty much like an internet plan. In a typical site, you might find that the first page requires 20 kilobytes of download (page weight of that page), and visits to subsequent pages require much less additional data download as some images are re-used from page to page.

To find out costs for visiting mobile sites, you need to check the data rates that apply to your phone plan with your carrier. As a general guide (and please note that different sites will have different page weights), the average mobile site page powered by Campaign Mobile is less than 20 kilobytes in page weight, and if you visit four or five pages on a single site, the total page weight will probably be less than 50 kilobytes (some images are re-used from page to page). These figures are indicative only and are provided for guidance.

I received the SMS but could not access the mobile site - what is the story?

The first issue is that your phone and your carrier plan must both be configured to enable you to visit mobile sites. If you are in any doubt regarding your phone/carrier settings, please contact your carrier and/or phone manufacturer.

We have chosen to implement the simple technology whereby we provide the mobile site link directly in the SMS that is sent to your mobile. This has the advantage that everyone can see the information sent in the SMS and can read the mobile site URL (Uniform Resource Locator). The URL is the unique mobile web address for the mobile site.

Most modern mobile phones will have the ability to directly follow a mobile site link (URL) by simply clicking on the link directly from the SMS this is pretty much the same as clicking a website link using the mouse on your computer. Some older phones might require that you enter the URL into your phones web browser, and some much older phones might not be able to visit the mobile internet at all. If you are having difficulty or are unsure, please contact either your carrier or your handset manufacturer for assistance.

You might also be with a carrier that does not allow mobile website browsing, or that requires you to pay for a specific plan that enables you to access the mobile web. It is the view of the Campaign Mobile team that eventually carriers will remove any of these restrictions, and will not only allow full access of all individuals to the mobile internet, but will provide data charges at very low (or even free) rates. We have seen the same trend in the internet, where in its early days there were restrictions and potentially high data costs to visit sites, whereas these days most people dont even need to know how much data it will cost them to visit a site because the data charge is insignificant or is included in their internet data plan.

I did not receive an SMS when I clicked on the SEND button what gives?

There are a few reasons why this might have happened. We would normally expect that you would receive the SMS within one minute of pressing SEND. If none of the following apply, then please send us your details by visiting the Contact Us section and give us as much information as possible so we can help with your query. Some of the reasons you might not have received the message are:

You could be out of range of your mobile carrier

There could be issues in your carrier deliverer network that cause delays of up to 24 hours, or even cause messages to be lost. These are issues beyond our control but they probably affect less than 1% of SMS messages, so if you have tried more than once without success, please let us know at Contact Us

Campaign Mobile reaches consumers in over 200 countries and territories internationally, but there is a chance that you might be from one of the very few places we cannot reach with an SMS. Our Mobile reach List is at the following link Campaign Mobile SMS Reach.
